On The Japan Art Catalog (JAC) Project.
展覧会カタログは、美術の研究者にとって、作品や作家に関する最新の調査・研究の成果が盛り込まれた貴重な情報源である。しかし、日本で発行されるほとんどの展覧会カタログは、会期中に開催場所で限られた部数が販売されるのみで、一般の出版市場に流通しない。書店や出版取次を通して購入することができず、書誌コントロールもされない、「灰色文献」の範疇となっているのが現状だ。
こうした資料を網羅的、体系的に収集するのは、日本の美術図書館にとっても長年の間、非常に困難な課題と位置づけられていたし、いわんやこれを海外で実現しようというのはまず不可能に近かった。こうした状況を打開するための取り組みとして1995年に設立されたのがJapan Art Catalog (JAC）プロジェクトである。JACは、海外からの入手が困難な日本の展覧会カタログを収集し、北米、欧州、大洋州のディポジトリー機関に送付するプロジェクトである。
JACプロジェクトの運営は、2004年、プロジェクトの創設に尽力した（財）国際文化交流推進協会（エース・ジャパン）の手から、国立新美術館に移管された。国立新美術館では、日本美術や文化に関心を持つ人々に対しプロジェクトのより一層の周知を図るとともに、今年から欧州の拠点をライデン大学 地域研究研究所 東亜図書館に変更するなど、資料の充実とアクセシビリティの改善を目指している。
Exhibition catalogues often include groundbreaking studies of works of art and artists and are indispensable sources of information for those active in the field of art research. Yet the vast majority of such catalogues produced in Japan falls under the category of "gray literature." They are privately printed on a small print run basis and only available directly through the galleries or museums that host or hosted the exhibition, and do not enter normal channels or systems of publication, distribution, bibliographic control, or acquisition by booksellers or subscription agents.
To acquire and build up a comprehensive collection of such publications has long been a major difficulty for the Japanese art libraries, and futile hope for overseas institutions. The Japan Art Catalog (JAC) Project was established in 1995 as an effort to improve the situation and facilitate access for art historians and the general public to otherwise extremely hard-to-acquire materials by collecting and depositing them in designated libraries in North America, Europe, and Oceania.
In 2004 the National Art Center, Tokyo (NACT), expansively took over the JAC Project from the founding organization, the Japan Association for Cultural Exchange (ACE Japan) and is now responsible for the overall administration. Recently, NACT has appointed the East Asian Libraries of the Leiden Institute for Area Studies as the new central base in Europe with the goal of promoting, enriching and facilitating the JAC resources for those with interest in Japanese arts and cultures.
